2003 was my year of exploring the fashionable idea of “physiological ripeness”… yes, even I am not always immune to market pressures. On top of this, the yields were ridiculously low (<1 ton/acre, or ~15 h/h in the old world) and the resulting Syrah cuveé was so huge and rich in fruit that I was horrified and thought to myself – “Holy %*@#! how will I ever be able to sell this?”. Fortunately, the wine did calm down a bit with further aging and even started to express some terroir character behind its wall of rich fruit… So we decided to call it the French equivalent. And by now it’s not that bad, either…

The 2003 Sacré Bleu Syrah is a wine of large proportions: full bodied, immensely concentrated, very powerful and structured. It has good acidity, even purity of fruit, and a lot of depth. It is not a Shiraz-look-alike, it is not sweet and thick. Its spice, acidity, and backbone give it the necessary uplift to keep it seemingly light on its feet. This has the potential to age for decades.
