1997 was the first experiment with producing this single-site Syrah bottling. Referred to as the “Granite Crown”, this it is the rockiest section of the entire Renaissance vineyard, with a perfect all-day sun exposure at 2300+ ft elevation. A text-book site for Syrah, it packs an incredible flavor punch and concentration into a medium frame, resulting in a stunning display of aromatic complexity, intensity, and depth without sacrificing its freshness or showing any excessive weight or overbearing richness.
And, now, it also has the added benefit of decades of cellaring.
This one-barrel experiment, led to the birth of Clos Saron’s own Syrah a few years later. We farmed our “Heart of Stone” grapes right next to the Granite Crown, the site that produced this wine.
