1997 was the first experiment with producing this single-site Syrah bottling. Referred to as the “Granite Crown”, this it is the rockiest section of the entire Renaissance vineyard, with a perfect all-day sun exposure at 2300+ ft elevation. A text-book site for Syrah, it packs an incredible flavor punch and concentration into a medium frame, resulting in a stunning display of aromatic complexity and intensity without sacrificing its freshness or showing any excessive weight or overbearing richness. With the added benefit of decades of aging potential.
This one-barrel experiment, led to the birth of Clos Saron’s own Syrah a few years later. We farmed our “Heart of Stone” grapes on a very similar terroir, right next to the Granite Crown.
