2002 The year of the Flower. Aromatic intensity and purity.
A third consecutive frost damage year. Extremely uneven ripening this year. We had to extend our harvesting over 21 days (that makes an average of 35 lbs. per pass!). In a larger vineyard 2002 would have been a disastrous vintage, due to a combination of both unripe and over-ripe grapes in the same clusters. We spent hours painstakingly removing every under-ripe and over-ripe grape from every cluster in order to crush only perfectly even, ripe fruit. Time will tell if it was worth the effort. Now in the bottle, it looks like another winner, with great purity and balance.
Tasting Date: 6/27/2006 At the Pinot Days lineup.
Very intense bouquet: pure, detailed, refined, with great balance of fruit/flower and minerals. Med-bodied, elegant, and layered in the mouth. Showing really well today, and possibly a candidate for our best ever vintage. No excesses, all in elegance and grace, with intensity and unusual aromatic persistance. The flowers and spicy herbs come back at the finish.
Tasting Date: 6/1/2004 This wine is evolving a little faster in the bottle than previous vintages. Typically, it is adding in volume and showing more structure at this stage. The initial flowery freshness in now deepened by riper fruity and spicy notes.
Tasting Date: 12/18/2003 Bottled earlier today. Medium color; heady flowery bouquet nicely framed by spicy, fruity, and oaky notes. Luscious fruit, very elegant and smooth, fine texture, extremely long and aromatic.
Tasting Date: 1/15/2003 Penetrating flowery aromas (rose, iris), bright fruit, great charm. This is exciting.
