1999 The year of the Velvet. The first vintage of our Clos Saron Pinot Noir.
Our first harvest to produce a sufficient quantity of grapes to conduct a reasonably controllable fermentation. 60 cases bottled in November 2000. Immediately expressive of the Clos Saron Terroir, it has a solid tannic backbone with dark, velvety, essence of black cherry character. Earthy minerals and herbal spices in the finish.
Tasting Date: 6/27/2006 At the Pinot Days lineup. Expansive nose with great detail and complexity - a Pinot and yet very distinctive; rich in the mouth with harmonious flavors, still holding a little back behind the structured core; showing even more complexity and length than ever before. Worthy first release...
Tasting Date: 6/5/2005 Another small step towards maturity; the velvet is getting more delicate, and the original tannic density has been transformed into harmonious richness. Irrisistable - the first wine to "evaporate" off the table in our Cafe Collage dinner following the Spring Open House tasting.
Tasting Date: 11/19/2004 The color is now starting to show some age and so does the nose; flirting with that typical mature Pinot magic, but not quite there yet. Mostly on the palate it's still holding back on its reserves and not giving itself away yet.
Tasting Date: 12/1/2003 Getting increasingly jovial with age. Or is it just growing a belly? More fat, rounder, the fruit is still young and bright.
Tasting Date: 12/1/2002 Aging slowly. Hints of things to come: leather, chocolate, more harmonious. The black cherry seems to be here to stay.
Tasting Date: 12/1/2001 Dark in color and full bodied. Ripe black cherry, raspberry, wet earth, rose petal, and pinot funk. Big tannins, velvety texture.
